After 27 years as an administrator in the developmental disability field, Jason Umstot decided it was time to take the next step in his career. Earning his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership – Health and Human Services online from Youngstown State University turned out to be one of the best decisions he ever made.

Jason initially had concerns about pursuing a degree online, particularly the fear of isolation. However, those anxieties were quickly put to rest. “One of the biggest fears that I had was not having that connection that I was used to in classes,” he explained. “So, it was nice to know that that wasn’t [true]. I didn’t feel that at all, not one time.” The structure of the program allowed Jason to feel connected to both faculty and classmates, creating a sense of community that exceeded his expectations.
Applying What He Learned—Right Away

“I absolutely love the format. I thought it worked perfect for me,” he said. The unique structure gave him a great sense of accomplishment and allowed him to make real-time contributions to his field.
He finds it especially rewarding when others come across his work and reach out. “There’s nothing better than someone saying, ‘Hey, I was looking up some stuff, and your dissertation popped up. I’m going to be able to cite you in this.’ And that’s a really good feeling.
In high school, Jason was told he would never make it to college. That moment became a powerful motivator for him to pursue higher education and prove them wrong. Reflecting on his journey, Jason now proudly says, “Today, I would like to tell those people or that person, ‘Come see me now.’”
